What is Personal Training?

To some, a personal trainer is a glorified repetition counter who tells their clients things that they already know. Others who have had the benefit of training with a certified and qualified personal trainer will tell you something different.

A certified personal trainer is someone who helps you identify your fitness related goals and takes you through the necessary steps to help you to achieve them.

Here are four top things that certified and experienced personal trainer can do to help you raise your game:

1. Identify Fitness Goals

A personal trainer sits down with you to set precise and detailed fitness goals. For example, we all have that 5 kilos that we want to lose but it has merely remained a desire and a new year’s resolution for the past 5 years. A fitness objective set with a trainer follow the SMART goal setting principles – geek-speak for Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-sensitive targets. This way, these goals are real and, more importantly, achievable.

2. Identify Limitations

Most people have had experienced some sort of injury in their life, from commonplace injuries like a bad knee, or bad ankle, to more severe limitations like a slipped disc. Some situations are more complex – injuries are amplified by a medical condition, making it hard for the individual to exercise, but in order to get better, the individual must exercise. This is where a personal trainer comes in. We work with our clients to identify their limitations and structure a training program to help address these weak points as well as overcome them.

3. Form and Technique

Just like how a student graduates from his class to a college degree, exercise has the same requirements; one does not get fit by paying for a gym membership. Every exercise and movement in the gym requires basic know-hows in terms of form and technique. Watching a Youtube video to learn the exercise does not guarantee effectiveness and safety. Just as how every trainer will go back to being coached at some point, personal training is as important as a degree to professionals out there looking to get healthier and fitter.

4. Motivation!

Personal training is about getting that motivation and the extra push to work out! Let’s face it; we tend to lose motivation after a long and tiring day at work. In many cases, we tend to skip the turn off to the gym after a long day’s at work to go home instead (or to meet with friends for a drink). This usually means, a whole evening in surfing front of the computer, or in front of the TV, while munching on fries and drinking a coke. Having a personal trainer on your speed dial gives you that extra push to choose to work out after work, even though your energy levels are low and achieve what you had set out to do 5 years ago.

Inside Out Beauty

Written by Fitology on . Posted in Trainer's Blog

Open any magazine or turn on your television today and you will undoubtedly be inundated by hundreds of beauty-related advertisements. Most, if not all, focus on cosmetic fixes – application of tonics and creams to the surface area of the skin to achieve the desired results. Cosmetics, as the word itself attests, is a superficial fix and have no lasting effects. Being bombarded with this constant and never ending stream of cosmetic ads, we lose sight of the most important factor in beauty. True beauty comes from inside you.

Here are 5 important tips that will allow your body to not only feel better, but look better also. These tips are no secret sauce and deep down, you already know them, and only a reminder will suffice.

1. Exercise

The very core of your body is the cardio vascular system which comprises of your heart, lungs and blood vessels. Regular exercise will improve the entire cardio vascular system, allowing your body to better send oxygen and nutrients to your entire body while removing remove waste by-products. Better blood flow to your epidermis means healthier skin.

Exercise also strengthens your muscular-skeletal structure – the network of muscles and bones that hold us upright and help us move. Muscles require fuel, whereas fat is a storage of fuel, which means the more muscle you have the more your  metabolic rate increases – in short you burn more calories on a daily basis. With regular exercise, bones also get stronger and increase in density. Stronger and denser bones reduce your risk of osteoporosis as you age. Another lovely benefit of a better muscular-skeletal structure is that your posture improves. Always wanted to be taller? You can easily gain an inch by standing straighter, aided by stronger bones and muscles!

As you exercise more you will also notice another “side effect” – more energy. There is nothing sexier than a person who walks by with a spring in her step.

2. Detoxify

We live in a toxic world. Our body is constantly exposed to all kinds of toxins. The food we eat and even the cosmetics and lotions we use daily to improve your looks may have harmful agents. These toxins build up over time, and are in affect, poisoning you. While it is almost impossible to live a toxin-free life, there are things we can do to help our bodies  purge these harmful agents.

One simple step is to drink lots of water. Your body is equipped with its own filtering system – exercise helps, because this filtering system relies on the ability of your vascular system to remove the toxins from the body through sweat and urine. And this mechanism relies heavily on having enough fluids in the body to transport and expel these toxins.

Far Infrared (FIR) Therapy is a great way to promote the removal of toxins from fatty deposits just under the dermis. FIR rays are emitted at 4-16 microns (a micron is one-millionth of a metre) benefiting the human body.

The rays activate water molecules and as they pulsate through the resonance process, resulting in many positive benefits including:

– improved blood circulation and  metabolism;

– cleansing of toxic waste – including the elimination of environmental and fat soluble toxins through sweat

– lowering of acidity and improving the oxygen levels in the blood

The end result is glowing skin and the lifting of your complexion. You will not only feel better, but look healthier.

3. Nutrition

There is an old saying that “you are what you eat”. We need to eat right, if you are going to look right. Food is fuel and you need fuel to ensure your body continues to function well and is key to looking great. Eat on the freshest food you can buy and avoid processed food. No time to cook your own meals, then try blending your breakfast every morning. It is quick and easy to do and your body will thank you for it.

Blending fresh fruits and vegetables is a good way to start the day as fruit sugar (fructose) is easily digested. Berries, kiwis and pineapples contain high levels of anti-oxidants which helps your body get rid of free radicals which is a cancer causing agent. Besides all the vitamins and other essential minerals found in these ingredients, blending whole fruits and vegetables also means that you do not waste all the fibre which will helps digestion. Best of all, blending is quick and easy.

4. Rest and Relaxation

Often over looked, sleep is when your body has the time to repair itself, so getting 8 hours of sleep every night is essential for a healthier body. Another great reason for going horizontal for 8 hours is to let your spine decompress. That’s right, standing or sitting around all day compresses the spine which makes you slightly shorter as the day progresses. Sleep actually helps reverse this effect. Sleep also helps reset the brain, which definitely helps improve mood and mental faculties. Look at yourself in the mirror after sleep depravation, and you cannot help but agree that without rest, you will look terrible.

Did you know that massage transcends every culture in the world? Our ancestors knew then as we know now that massage helps realign your skeletal structure, promotes blood flow, relief tired muscles and it leaves you feeling renewed and fabulous. And when you feel fabulous inside, chances are that is going to radiate outwards.

5. Do Not Procrastinate

Knowing how to look and feel better is useless until you actually start applying this knowledge. Our hope is that you will stop thinking about it and actually doing what is best for you. Beauty from inside out.
